Dec 30th vs Boston Celtics
Gametime 7 pm Pacific Time
Good news! Everyone gets to see this game. It will be broadcast locally on KGW TV Channel 8.

The last time these two teams met it was in Boston on December 5th. ESPN has a recap of the game here. The Blazers held their own for the first quarter of the game before the Celtics took over and dominated the game. Boston travels to Portland to play the Blazers tonight in a rematch the Blazers have been looking forward to.

After the game Brandon Roy told the press that the Celtics showed the Blazers how they want to be playing the game, and how a team sustains tough defensive play for a full 48 minutes. Roy said thats how our Blazer team has to play if we expect to compete against the top teams in this league and that our players are going to have to step up their efforts. For a look back at what happened in that game you can click here for a video recap and a look at the highlights, and a video of Kevin Garnett barking at Jerryd Bayless.

Not to minimize the importance of defense, but one thing seems certain to me about this game, and that is that we will be looking at pretty much the same result if the Blazers don't come up with some more imaginative offensive schemes. In the first game the Celtics closed down the interior and forced the Blazers into an outside game and running ISO's. They are probably the best defensive team in the league. And this strategy stopped Kobe and the Lakers in the NBA finals, and it will stop us again if we go to the one on one play or start jacking up a bunch of jumpers from outside. Time for Nate to get the old chalkboard out and come up with some new plays, some motion, and some new wrinkles on our pick and roll. If we try the same strategy we will be looking at the same results. We've been having this problem off and on since the game with Boston. They exposed some weaknesses and other teams have been taking advantage of them. Brandon Roy can not singlehandedly beat all these teams we play by going one on one during the last five minutes of each game. Guaranteed we will see the same results if we employ the same strategy.

We are going to have to get some stops against the Celtics too. Habitual defensive lapses and a lack of consitent perimeter defense has led to lots of easy inside scoring opportunites for our opponents. Once he gets beaten young Greg Oden has thus far been unable to resist the temptation to reach in and try to make a play. This has resulted in two or three fouls for Greg every night. If he doesn't pay attention to this against Boston he will wind up with another short night. He looked much better against the Raptors and hopefully he can have the same kind of game against the Celtics.

You can be pretty darn certain the Boston Celtics want to win this game. And you can be pretty darn certain they will go full speed all forty eight minutes of this game to make sure they do. Portland has shown less and less desire lately to put forth that kind of effort. I'm not counting on them being able to do so in this game either and the result will be that Boston will win by at least ten points.

More movement and less pick and roll, Boston plays the p/r well unlike the crappy p/r defense we showed against Berera and Dallas. The ISO would work better with quick passes out of the doubles Brandon recieved the last time, it looked like BRoy was surprised he was getting doubled out top. Good ball movement out of those doubles should get some open shots and a few dunks......Anyhooo I'll stick with my homer goggles and assume Nate and the guys have worked on something....Blazers by 4

Will someone please hit KG in the mouth when he starts woofing like that? (I'm looking at you, LA) I don't care if that guy ends up with a 5 game suspension for doing that. It's about time the front court grow some backbone, with Joel being the exception, of course.

No, wait, don't hit Kevin in the mouth! That's what started his mouth in the first place. Garnett wasn't that big of a smack talker until Anthony Peeler caught him in the jaw with Muay Thai style elbow. Garnett got beat up and his T-Wolves lost in the finals. KG's mouth hasn't stopped since that unfortunate incident.Image

I agree someone needs to take one for the team, but Joel is not exempt from allowing people to step all over him, what comes to mind is Shaq planting a basketball into Joel's forehead last year (can't find a decent video of it) and getting no retaliation. I lost alot of respect for Joel's toughness on that night.

Nate needs to either give the players ear plugs or just have the Blazers play their game without getting into the smack talking.

When Brandon got into the smack talking his game went downhill.

The only way the Blazers can shut the mouths of the Celtics is to come out and take a big lead in the 1st half. Trade point for point in the 3rd quarter and then just turn on the defense again in the 4th and start to pull away.... I know easier said then done against the world champs.

Boston going to be coming in with a huge chip on their shoulder as they know the Blazers get a lot of publicity as an up and coming team. It's the H.S. players vs. the Jr. High players.

Brandon is hurt with a sore hamstring and Oden twisted his ankle late in Monday's practice. Both are going to be playing....

Blazers 107 Boston 105  (got to stay optimistic)

Firing up KG is never a good idea, unless you'd like to see him single-handedly destroy your team.

Looks like Roy maybe out and Rudy to start with Bayless seeing backup minutes tonight.

Not looking good for the Blazers if Roy can't play.

I didn't get to see much of the game, but awesome win. I am so glad Oden played and they won. I had a bad feeling that neither would happen. Roy being out wasn't so bad in my mind, but Oden needs to keep playing. Yes.

Great win.
Vastly exceeded my expectations.
Some of Odens fouls appeared to me to be the direct result of Maurice Lucas coaching.
Travis made some smart fouls in the 2nd half, refusing to let the Celtics get to the basket.
Bayless didn't show me much in the minutes his fans were clamoring for.
I can't talk, been screaming for a couple of hours.
Best game I've seen this year.
Going steelhead fishing in the morning.

To be fair, retaliating against Shaq is probably not a good idea if you want to live a long healthy life. Still, Joel plays Shaq as tough as anyone in the league. Whenever Shaq calls someone out publicly, it means that the person is in his head.

LA did show a bit of backbone tonight with the double T late n the game. KG is just plain dirty these days with an elbow thrown at Outlaw when he dunked on him as well as the elbow that got him the double T with LA. I used to like the guy, but now he has replaced Derek Fisher as "The player I would most like to drop kick in the face". I am willing to pay upwards of four figures to make this happen, with proceeds going to charity.
