Przybilla re-ruptures tendon

Postby pinman42 on Sun Mar 07, 2010 1:08 pm

PORTLAND, Ore. – Trail Blazers center Joel Przybilla will undergo surgery on his right patella tendon in the next few days.

Przybilla re-ruptured his right patella tendon Saturday morning after slipping in the shower at his home in Milwaukee, Wis.

He returned to Portland today to undergo an MRI, which revealed the rupture.

Przybilla originally ruptured the tendon in a Dec. 22 game at Dallas. He underwent season-ending surgery on Dec. 24 and was in Milwaukee rehabilitating the injury.

No timetable is available for his return to the court.

This is horrible for Prz.

He was questionable to be ready for fall camp when he originally injured his leg in late Dec as I was told it would be 7-8 months before he could start full court scrimmages and another 4-6 weeks in full practices before he could play in pre-season (i.e. mid to late October).

Now, I'm guessing from the previous info. It would be more like middle of Dec or early January 2011 before we see Przybilla ready to play in a game.

I think the re-signing of Marcus Camby has got to be a top priority for next season.

We need Camby bad then. Who knows at what strength Pryz will come back at.
Wonder if Howard will want to come back as well.

I'm going to post a couple of different posts on Camby and Howard. Both subjects have more information to talk about.

Slipping in the shower? He must have been going for a dunk.

This is really sad for Joel--he has gone from having the ability to be a highly coveted free agent after this season and probably getting seriously overpayed, to having to limp along and go into free agency in 2011 with the injury question mark hanging over his head.

It also means that 1) the trade for Camby looks better and better and 2) we had freakin better resign him.

Howard was an obvious re-sign anyway.
Camby should be signed or sign and trade. Signed is better at 2 years and a team option 3rd.

It's a shame for Prz, but he was likely to opt-in anyway. Now, it's a no brainer, so financially he's still o.k.
If he comes back from it, his relatively low mileage and "hard hat and lunch pail" status with Portland will likely get a contract at a reasonable price for both.

The thing about Prz is that insurance kicked in at 41 games missed. If it's the stanadard type, then it's 20% by the Blazers, 80% by insurance. He counts fully with the salary cap, but that's not an issue. What is significant is that this summer--after opting in--he becomes a "golden ticket" (ala RLEC).
1. Expiring contract of some size ($7.4 mil and change)
2. 80% covered by insurance
3. And better than RLEC, assuming he gets healthy, he's worth resigning as a decent center.

Przybilla Slips in Shower, Reinjures Knee

3/07/2010 11:15 PM ET By Chris Tomasson

DENVER -- How bad has it been this season for the Portland Trail Blazers?

"Now, even our injured players are getting injured,'' lamented Trail Blazers coach Nate McMillan before Sunday night's game at Denver.

McMillan got a call Saturday afternoon from athletic trainer Jay Jensen with the news Portland center Joel Przybilla had slipped in the shower earlier in the day at his Milwaukee home. It was confirmed Sunday that Przybilla, who was lost for the season Dec. 22 due to a ruptured patella tendon in his right knee, had re-ruptured that tendon in the mishap and will undergo in a few days his second surgery in 2 ½ months.

"At first Jay called me right before (the Trail Blazers) left (Saturday) for Denver and said, 'You're not going to believe this,''' said McMillan, whose team has been riddled by injuries all season. "I didn't when he said it ... It's been that type of season where we've had this happen. We've just got to keep moving forward.''

Although McMillan and other Trail Blazers officials didn't want to speculate on when Przybilla might be able to return, the injury could be career threatening for Przybilla, 30, who has one more season left on his contract at $7.4 million. Przybilla had gone down just 17 days after Portland's initial starting center, Greg Oden, had been lost for the season due to a knee injury.

After being hurt, Przybilla flew to Portland, Ore., on Sunday to be examined. It was there an MRI confirmed the re-rupture.

"It's a tough situation,'' said Trail Blazers center Marcus Camby, who was acquired last month from the Los Angeles Clippers to help fill the void due to the injuries to Oden and Przybilla. "They were saying before (that Przybilla's injury) was going to be pretty tough to come back from. But now, after doing it again, hopefully God is on his side and he can make a miraculous comeback. But it's going to take some time.''

Przybilla had undergone surgery Dec. 24, and McMillan said he had been doing well in his rehabilitation. He said Przybilla's advancement perhaps played a role in the freak accident.

"You're at a huge risk when you're three, four months out (from surgery),'' McMillan said. "You start to think you can move and start to feel a little better moving a little faster. You just have to be careful ... Jay said he was doing great, and I'm sure Joel was starting to feel better and got a little bit more comfortable.''

Przybilla averaged 4.1 points and 7.9 rebounds this season and has 10-year averages of 4.2 points and 6.5 rebounds. He long has provided a strong defensive presence for the Trail Blazers.

I dunno about the third point. After two major knee surgeries in a row, he's going to be limited in his mobility and hops.,,and that should impact his shot blocking, rebounding, and his defense. Plus, he's not exactly spring chicken at this point.

JPEC is his value from this point on. Perhaps with Collison tearing it up, CP3 becomes available? Or, if NJ gets the first pick (Wall), Devin Harris becomes very available. We'd have JPEC, Miller, Bayless or Rudy, and Webster as trade assets if we do trade for a PG.

You know this could be a career ender for Joel, at his age to come back to his former self is a huge uphill climb....

We may have seen the last of Joel in a Blazer uniform...

You are right that this is a big deal. Resigning Camby is virtually a MUST at this time. Getting a young center in development is practically a MUST as well.
